The days are flying by as Christmas approaches and people are busy getting ready for their own special celebrations. As you are doing this, don’t forget to enjoy each day. On Saturday, December 16, you can purchase those last minute decorations and gifts while enjoying the day at the same time. Just head into Shallotte, NC to the new Christmas Village in Mulberry Park at 123 Mulberry Street. From 11 Am until 3 PM you can visit 50 vendors and purchase holiday decorations, gifts, veggies, cider and more. Got an ugly Christmas sweater? Want to show it off? Like to run races? Check out the Southport Ugly Sweater 5K and Reindeer Run (a 1 mile walk/run) with or without antlers. The run begins Saturday, December 16 at 8 AM on Bay Street in Southport, NC, so signup at coastalraceproductions.com (use code Southport20). Coffee, hot chocolate and cookies will be available after the race and the event supports the NC Fourth of July Festival.

If you are yearning to attend just one more Christmas Parade, you are in luck.  Bolivia, NC will hold its Christmas Parade beginning at 6 PM on Saturday, December 16. The parade will begin at the Brunswick County Government Center and follow Old Ocean Highway to Bolivia. Enjoy!

THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

This weekend the fun begins on Friday, December 8, 2017, in Southport, NC. Your family and friends can start the afternoon at 3 PM at the NC Maritime Museum. There a Victorian lady will take you on a Holiday History Tour. Then beginning at 5:30 PM, kids of all ages can ride on a fire engine in the Light up the Night parade. The parade will also include classic cars, bands and floats among other interesting entrants. Refreshments with Santa will be served at the fire station after the parade.

Saturday offers a full day of fun. The Winterfest Winter Craft Festival will be held in Franklin Square Park in Southport, NC from 9 AM until 4 PM. There you will find holiday decorations, gifts and food. You can even make your own wreath with instruction by members of the Southport Beautification Club for a $30 fee. A Handmade Christmas will be held at the Southport Community Building from 10 AM until 1 PM.

Also on Saturday, from 1 PM until 6 PM you can enjoy the festive decorations in a list of Southport homes that will be included in the Winterfest Christmas Tour of Homes. After dinner, you can enjoy the Winterfest Christmas Flotilla from 7 PM until  PM – or decorate your own boat and take part yourself.

If you will be in the Leland, NC area on Saturday, you might want to take in the North Brunswick Christmas Festival and Parade beginning at 10 AM. On Sunday, beginning at 1 PM you can also enjoy An 18th Century Christmas at the Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site. All of these wonderful festivities should get you in the mood for celebration.

There is still another week until Christmas. I know some of you are frantically making last minute preparations, but I would like to suggest taking a breather this weekend and enjoying some time with the kids. There is still a chance to see Santa at Horseplay Farms in Bolivia, NC on Saturday. He also will appear in the Bolivia Christmas Parade where you can see horses and llamas as well. The parade will begin at 11 AM with hot dogs and refreshments afterwards at the fire hall.

On Saturday, in Southport, NC (1 PM – 3 PM) you can spend A Victorian Afternoon at the Maritime Museum making Victorian Christmas ornaments and listening to Christmas stories. At 3 PM you can head over to Oak Island for their Holiday Craft Making at the Oak Island Nature Center. (Pre-registration required at 278-5518)

You can head south to Sunset Beach, NC where you can enjoy ‘Season of Light’ at the Ingram Planetarium. This interesting and informative presentation will be shown at noon and at 6 PM Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Whatever you decide to do – do it with love and joy in the spirit of the season.

FOCUS ON CHRISTMAS

Southport, NC  Winterfest has begun! The sailboat wreaths are lining the streets and the trees are shining with lights. The cookies in the cookie baking contest have been gobbled and judged (winner to be announced). Supper with Santa’s Elves has been enjoyed by all the little kiddies. Tonight from 5 PM until 8 PM you can tote your chairs, snuggle under your blankets and watch the movie, The Polar Express, on the Fort Johnston Garrison Lawn. Friday’s lineup includes a Costumed Holiday History Tour and the NC Maritime Museum at Southport beginning at 3 PM and the Fire Engine Parade with the fire engines loading the kids at the Southport Fire Station at 5:30 PM and the parade beginning at 6:30 PM. (Heads up – Howe Street will be closed for the duration of the parade). After the parade, the kids will visit with Santa and enjoy refreshments.

Saturday will be the big day with events all day and into the night. From 9 AM until 4 PM you can enjoy the handmade and home grown offerings at the Winter Craft Festival on the Fort Johnston Garrison lawn. From 9 AM until noon you can browse the Friends of the Library book sale held at Southport Realty at 727 N. Howe St. Books make great gifts! There will be a Santa’s Workshop for the kids at the Southport Recreation building from 10 AM until 11 AM. From 1 PM until 3 PM, the Southport Community Building will host an Old Timey Gospel Fest, sponsored by the Smithville Township/Southport Black History Committee. The Old Brunswick County Jail will offer tours from 2 PM until 7 PM. The Christmas Tour of Homes will begin at 2 PM and continue until 7 PM. It provides the opportunity for you to see lovely local homes all decorated for Christmas. At 7 PM, be prepared to find a great spot to watch the Christmas Flotilla as the beautifully decorated boats sail past.

You could also head for Leland, NC on Saturday for the North Brunswick Christmas Festival & Parade. The parade will begin at 10 AM, with the festival entertainment beginning at noon. On Sunday from 1 PM until 5:30 PM, you can experience An 18th Century Christmas at Brunswicktown/Fort Anderson State Historic Site in Winnabow, NC. Whatever you choose to do – enjoy!

PARADES & LIGHTS & CONCERTS

December 1 and the kids are getting excited. It’s the beginning of a month full of excitement for all ages. It’s a month that will be packed with interesting, fun and beautiful things to do. And it starts today.

At 6PM this evening,  Holden Beach, NC will celebrate its tree lighting with games, a hayride and even a chili/soup cookoff. Calabash, NC will hold its tree lighting and parade beginning at 6 PM Friday. The towns of Oak Island, NC and Southport, NC will hold tree lightings on Friday, too, both beginning at 5:30 PM. Seasonal music at the Amuzu in Southport, NC will begin on Friday as well and will continue through December 11.

Saturday, December 3, seems to be the day when you will be able to find Christmas themed things to do just about anywhere in Brunswick County. You can begin with a Pancake Breakfast (8 AM until 10 AM) at the Community Center in Boiling Spring Lakes, NC – then scuttle the kids over to ‘Whoville’ until 11 AM. From 5 PM until 8 PM that same day, kids can ride a fire truck to see Santa and participate in a Christmas Festival. In the Town of Oak Island, NC, you can visit the holiday craft market at the Recreation Center from 9 AM until 2 PM. At 2 PM the Christmas by the Sea Parade will begin. Shallotte, NC will hold its Christmas Parade on Saturday at 10 AM and Sunset Beach, NC will hold a Holiday Market from 10 AM until 4 PM.  Belville, NC will hold a tree lighting on Saturday at dusk followed by the movie, The Polar Express. The Sea Notes Choral Society  will hold its first Christmas Concert at the Odell Williamson Auditorium on Saturday at 3 PM as well. Their second concert will be on Sunday, December 4, at 3 PM at the same location. Also on Sunday, from noon until 4 PM, the Oak Island Beautification Club will hold its Merry Eats and Treats bake sale at the Recreation Center.

 

WINTERFEST

In Southport. NC. it is extremely rare for us to see snowflakes falling from the sky – much less snow on the ground. But no matter, the Winterfest celebration always begins in early December here. Christmas at the Amuzu is already in full swing having begun on December 3. Not to worry – you have not missed it. There are three more shows you can attend – on December 10, 12 and 13.
Today, December 9, from 3 PM until 6 PM, you can stop by the State Port Pilot Annual Cookie Contest at the Southport Community Building where you will find tables of yummy cookies on display. You can get some great ideas for your own Christmas Cookies and vote for your favorite as well.


From 5 PM until 7 PM, children ages 4 to 10 who have registered will enjoy Supper with Santa’s Elves held at the Southport Parks and Recreation Department next to the City Gym.
On Thursday, December 10, you can take your chairs and blankets to the Fort Johnston Museum Garrison Lawn, grab a cup of hot chocolate, make yourselves comfortable and watch the movie, Polar Express, from 5:30 PM until 8 PM.
On Friday, December 11, starting at 3 PM, you can enjoy the Costumed Tour at the NC Maritime Museum at Southport led by a Victorian Lady, a Civil War Soldier, or Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate. Beginning at 5:30 PM that same day the kids can take part in the Light up the Night Christmas Fire Engine Parade which begins at Waterfront Park. The parade ends at the Southport Fire Station where the kids can visit with none other than Santa Claus, himself, and enjoy some goodies as well.


Saturday, December 12, will be the big day for Winterfest, 2015, with a line-up of activities all day long. You might want to begin your day at the
Friends of the Library Book Sale to be held at Southport Realty (727 N. Howe St.) from 9 AM until 12 Noon. The Winter Craft Festival on the Fort Johnston Museum Garrison lawn will also begin at 9 AM and will run all day until 4 PM. From 10 30 AM until 12 Noon, the Southport Parks and Recreation Department will hold a Santa’s Workshop next to the Southport Gym. From 2 PM until 7 PM, you can enjoy Old Brunswick County Jail Tours. Also, from 2 PM until  PM, you can participate in the incomparable Christmas Tour of Homes – a self-guided tour that will take you through some of the most beautiful old – and new – homes in Southport, NC, all decorated for the holidays.
And, finally, the event we have waited all year to witness again: starting at 7 PM, the Southport Christmas Flotilla.
