ARTS, TOURS AND TREES

You are probably aware of the lantern led ghost walk tours given by the Old South Tour Company which include a tour of the Old Smithville Burying Ground, but did you know that you can take a daylight tour as well? These tours, led by Musette Steck, a local historian, take place each Wednesday afternoon starting at 2 PM. You might hear strains of harp music as she tells you about Tony, the ghost who used to play his harp in what is now The Brunswick Inn Bed & Breakfast. You will hear the story of the man whose legs are buried without his body and the reason for the tree stump markers that can be found in the cemetery. Tours are free, however, donations benefit the Fort Johnston/Southport Museum. Special tours can be arranged by calling: 910-454-0437.

Both Southport, NC and Oak Island, NC are designated Tree Cities USA. Who doesn’t love the old live oak trees the line the streets in Southport? Beyond the beauty offered by trees, their benefits to us and to the environment are numerous including clean air by the reduction of smog and greenhouse gases. Do you know you can get 10 free trees for a $10 donation? In the month of August, the Arbor Day Foundation is holding its Trees for America Campaign. For this small membership fee, you will receive the trees, information about planting and care, and their bi-monthly publication . Check it out at: arborday.org/august.

On Saturday from 10 AM – 2 PM you can explore the arts at the Leland Cultural Arts Center in Leland, NC. Here you can meet the instructors and enjoy demonstrations of their artistic processes as well as a ballet performance by students. You and your family members who are 11 years old or older can try out working in clay on a potter’s wheel. Poor Piggy’s BBQ & Catering food truck will be there to add to the fun of your day out.

GALLERY WALK, BANDFEST & COUNTRY MUSIC

It’s First Friday again and the weekend will kick off with the 1st Friday Gallery Walk in Southport, NC. Franklin Square Gallery will feature artist Marta McCallum and Potter, Dona Kanich, this month. The Ricky Evans Gallery will feature the unique style of Susan Dade and at Lantana’s, you will find original art by Jillian Boivin. Each location will offer snacks and drinks as well.

After the gallery walk you can head on over to Brunswick Little Theatre for their Open Mic Poetry Reading to read your original poetry, listen to others read theirs – or both. Sign-up will begin at 7 PM, with readings beginning at 7:30 PM. The reading will be held in room 1B, which is the building behind the main building. If country music is more your style, you can find that on Friday evening as well. The Oak Island Country Boys will be playing and singing at the Oak Island Recreation Center in Oak island, NC beginning at 6 PM. This also is a free event.

On Sunday afternoon beginning at 12:30 PM, you can enjoy the Paws-Ability BandFest in Sunset Beach, NC until 6PM. This event will take place at the Sunset Beach Waterfront Park and will include food and fun in addition to the music. You might even decide to adopt a pet. Proceeds will support local animal welfare.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND EVENTS

Summer is nearly gone, the kids have started back to school, and as much as we enjoy those lazy days, we can look forward to all the all events and fall fishing coming our way in Brunswick County, NC.  The first of those special events is starting tomorrow and lasts for a long weekend. You can start out your Labor Day celebrations by attending the First Friday Gallery Walk in Southport, NC (5 PM until 7 PM). If you decide to check it out, be sure not not miss Franklin Square Gallery where the featured exhibit will be paintings entered into the contest for the honor of appearing on the Southport Wooden Boat Show Poster and T-Shirts. Even more exciting , you can see the winning original painting, meet the artist, and have her sign your poster or T-shirt.

You can start Saturday off by attending the Labor Day Surf Off in Oak Island, NC beginning at 8 AM. Then mosey on over to the soccer field for the Oak Island Art Guild Labor Day Arts & Crafts Festival which will run from 9 AM until 4 PM. If you prefer, you can Go Jump in the Lake beginning at 8:30 AM in Boiling Spring Lakes, NC.

On Monday, you can check out the Children’s Crab Derby at the old yacht basin in Southport, NC beginning at 8:30 AM. All this is available and you will still have time to enjoy family and friends at your own picnics as well as music at many of the local restaurants.

ART, DIAMONDS & MARDI GRAS

Two stellar events will be happening in Southport, NC on Friday, March 3. From 5 PM until 7 PM, you can enjoy all kinds of two dimensional (paintings) and three dimensional (pottery) art in Southport’s own Franklin Square Gallery. This Spring Art Show reception will be presented by the Associated Artists of Southport. In addition to interesting art, there will be food and wine and an awards presentation for the winning artists.

Abstract, Colorful, Background, Tile, Diamond Shape

From 6 PM until 10 PM, folks will enjoy dining and dancing at the Diamonds and Denim Ball to be held at the St. James Community Center. This annual ball is an event of the Brunswick Sheriff’s Charitable Foundation and proceeds help local charities each year. It’s likely too late for you to purchase tickets (though, if you are interested, you could certainly check that out) as they go on sale starting in January. Make a note for next year.

As you probably know, this past Tuesday was Fat Tuesday. What you may not know is that you can attend Oak Island’s own Mardi Gras Parade & Party by the Sea on Saturday, March 4. Sponsored by the Town of Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department, this celebration will be loaded with events, including a parade, from 1 PM until 4 PM. Come on out and enjoy the day!

ART, MUSIC & MOVIES

Brunswick County, NC is well supplied with artists and they seem to migrate to the Southport, NC area. The beauty of the area is a draw I am sure, as well as the proliferation of scenes to be painted or incorporate into other art forms. Southport, NC also has some wonderful galleries where the work of artists is supported and sold. The first Friday of every month (from 5 PM – 7 PM) offers you an opportunity to tour these galleries and enjoy the art along with refreshments and camaraderie. You may even find that very special piece of art you just cannot live without, be it a painting, a piece of pottery, a sculpture, jewelry or something else. Included in the gallery walk is Franklin Square Gallery which is featuring their Regional Show this month. This show provides the opportunity for you to view the work of artists from around the region along with that of local artists. Lantana’s Gallery & Fine Gifts and ART@211Ricky Evans Gallery also participate in the art walk, each of them featuring a fine artist.

You can find music in the air nearly every evening during the season in Brunswick County, NC – and movies, too. Individual towns and the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department bring these opportunities to you along with support from the Brunswick County Arts Council. On Fridays, head to Oak Island NC or to Ocean isle Beach, NC; on Tuesdays, check out the Garrison House in Southport, NC and Calabash, NC; on Sundays, try Holden Beach, NC; on Thursdays – Shallotte, NC or Leland, NC. Music and movies alternate, so be sure to check out the schedule.

ARTS

Today, Brunswick County, NC artists will be lining up at the Oak Island Recreation Center in the Town of Oak Island, NC. Why? Today is the day they will deliver their multifarious works of art to be entered in the annual Arts by the Shore show. These works include paintings, pottery, jewelry, quilts, stained glass, wood working and so much more. Brunswick County, NC is blessed with so many skilled artists and Arts by the Shore is a great venue for you to see their work displayed. The show is open to the public on Friday, Saturday and at a reception on Sunday afternoon. Don’t miss it!

Speaking of art – you may not yet have heard about the opening of the Leland Cultural Arts Center in Leland, NC. At this center you can take classes in just about any artistic discipline you can think of. You will find classes in dancing, acting, poetry, writing, painting in several mediums, pottery and so much more. There is even a shop where some of the creative pieces made by Brunswick County, NC artists are sold. The center is well worth a stop to investigate. You may well be surprised by what you find there.

When people in Brunswick County, NC think of the word art, their thoughts invariably go to the Sunset River Marketplace in Sunset Beach, NC. This huge gallery is full of beautiful art pieces and includes things for your home decor, like furniture and pillows – all individually created by artists. You will marvel at the creative energy exuded by the wonderful works you will find here, and if it inspires your creative juices – all the better. You can take classes here as well.

DECORATING YOUR BEACH HOUSE

Decorating your new (or new to you) home can be so much fun, especially in Brunswick County, NC where locally owned shops with unique items abound. Yes, we have chain stores and furniture stores that also offer all kinds of household decorations for every room in the home as well as outdoors. But, if you are looking for something unique, I suggest shopping at the local stores. Even better – shop at the local galleries. The area is known for its abundance of artists in any number of genres. Excellent paintings and pottery are a given and you can find art made from driftwood, seashells, tin, wood, glass, bottles, aluminum, silver, used clothing, old flatware – just about any medium you can think of – and even some that you can’t! You can decorate your walls with beautiful paintings, your tables with interesting sculptures,  your windows with lovely stained glass, your deck with tinkling wind chimes, and enhance the fragrance of your bathrooms with sweet smelling handmade soaps. The ideas are endless as are the possibilities. Take your time – enjoy the process – and be open to the variety of art you will find.
