1ST FRIDAY, NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE WEEKEND AND MARITIME CLASSIC RUN FOR THE LIGHT

The days keep zipping by and it’s time again for the 1st Friday Gallery Walk – for the month of August. From 5 PM until 7 PM you can stroll from gallery to gallery to enjoy the artwork as well as some munchies and drinks. Each gallery will include special features in their presentations. Lantana’s Gallery & Fine Gifts will feature whimsical witch paintings by Ann Thompson done in her Original American Art style. Franklin Square Gallery will feature a painter as well as a clay artist. The paintings of Robin Sboto will be part of the special display accompanied by the creative clay art of Linda Drye. At Ricky Evans Gallery, new products featuring local charts and signal flags will hold pride of place.

On Saturday and Sunday, Bald Head Island, NC will celebrate National Lighthouse Weekend with fun and interesting events. On Sunday evening, winding up this auspicious weekend, the island will hold its annual Maritime Classic Run for the Light with a one mile fun run, a 5K and a 10K.

ART, POETRY, OPERA

This week Friday will be the day. The day when you may have to choose between events to attend, or, maybe you will be able to squeeze in a couple of events. The first First Friday Gallery Walk of 2018 will begin at 5 PM and end at 7 PM in downtown Southport, NC. Three galleries will be involved in this walk: Ricky Evans Gallery, Franklin Square Gallery and Lantana’s Gallery & Fine Gifts. Local Jewelry artist, Beth Zink, will be featured at Lantana’s. At Ricky Evan’s, Miniature Art Masterpieces by gallery artists will take center stage. While at Franklin Square Gallery you will enjoy the paintings and three dimensional objects in the Associated Artists of Southport Spring Art Show. You will even be able to witness the presentation of awards to the show winners. Also included in the evening will be delicious munchies and wine.

With sign-up beginning at 7 PM, Brunswick Little Theatre will be hosting their second Open Mic Poetry reading. At this event you will be able to read your own poetry; read poetry you enjoy that was written by someone else; or just be in the audience enjoying the poetry and encouraging the readers and writers.

If you like to dine and dance to live music while contributing to worthy local causes, you might want to attend the Diamonds and Denim Ball, also on Friday evening in Southport, NC.

Don’t miss Opera Sunday beginning at 2 PM on Sunday at the Southport Community Building. This event is presented by the Friends of the Library. The performers are from UNCW and these wonderful young students with amazing voices will be singing selections from Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND EVENTS

Summer is nearly gone, the kids have started back to school, and as much as we enjoy those lazy days, we can look forward to all the all events and fall fishing coming our way in Brunswick County, NC.  The first of those special events is starting tomorrow and lasts for a long weekend. You can start out your Labor Day celebrations by attending the First Friday Gallery Walk in Southport, NC (5 PM until 7 PM). If you decide to check it out, be sure not not miss Franklin Square Gallery where the featured exhibit will be paintings entered into the contest for the honor of appearing on the Southport Wooden Boat Show Poster and T-Shirts. Even more exciting , you can see the winning original painting, meet the artist, and have her sign your poster or T-shirt.

You can start Saturday off by attending the Labor Day Surf Off in Oak Island, NC beginning at 8 AM. Then mosey on over to the soccer field for the Oak Island Art Guild Labor Day Arts & Crafts Festival which will run from 9 AM until 4 PM. If you prefer, you can Go Jump in the Lake beginning at 8:30 AM in Boiling Spring Lakes, NC.

On Monday, you can check out the Children’s Crab Derby at the old yacht basin in Southport, NC beginning at 8:30 AM. All this is available and you will still have time to enjoy family and friends at your own picnics as well as music at many of the local restaurants.

FISHIN’ N SINGIN’

If you are an aficionado of both music and fishing, then you have a great weekend to look forward to in Brunswick County, NC. You may have to tweak your schedule a bit, but with all the venues for music and choices of days for fishing it shouldn’t be too much trouble. The Southport Songwriter Festival will kick off on Thursday evening with Louisa Branscomb and Friends of Distinction in Franklin Square Park in Southport, NC, from 6 PM until 8 PM. The festival will continue on Friday from 4 PM until 7 PM at the Southport Marina. On Saturday events will be held from 10 AM until noon on the Garrison lawn, from 2 PM until 3 PM at Lois Jane’s Riverview Inn, from 2 PM until 6 PM at Keziah Memorial Park, and from 6 PM until 9 PM at the Yacht Basin Eatery. Sunday is Fathers Day, so take that dad to the Southport Community Building for more music from 2 PM until 8 PM.

On Friday you are invited to view Tony Alderman’s paintings: Art of North Carolina Waterways, beginning at 4 PM at 311 West Brown Street in Southport, NC.

This weekend in Ocean Isle Beach, NC, you can take part in the Jolly Mon King Classic at the Ocean Isle Fishing Center. On Thursday there will be a Rock the Dock fishing contest for kids up to age 12. On Friday, the Jr. Jolly Mon will be held and adults can choose Saturday or Sunday to compete in the king classic.

ART, DIAMONDS & MARDI GRAS

Two stellar events will be happening in Southport, NC on Friday, March 3. From 5 PM until 7 PM, you can enjoy all kinds of two dimensional (paintings) and three dimensional (pottery) art in Southport’s own Franklin Square Gallery. This Spring Art Show reception will be presented by the Associated Artists of Southport. In addition to interesting art, there will be food and wine and an awards presentation for the winning artists.

Abstract, Colorful, Background, Tile, Diamond Shape

From 6 PM until 10 PM, folks will enjoy dining and dancing at the Diamonds and Denim Ball to be held at the St. James Community Center. This annual ball is an event of the Brunswick Sheriff’s Charitable Foundation and proceeds help local charities each year. It’s likely too late for you to purchase tickets (though, if you are interested, you could certainly check that out) as they go on sale starting in January. Make a note for next year.

As you probably know, this past Tuesday was Fat Tuesday. What you may not know is that you can attend Oak Island’s own Mardi Gras Parade & Party by the Sea on Saturday, March 4. Sponsored by the Town of Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department, this celebration will be loaded with events, including a parade, from 1 PM until 4 PM. Come on out and enjoy the day!

ARTS

Today, Brunswick County, NC artists will be lining up at the Oak Island Recreation Center in the Town of Oak Island, NC. Why? Today is the day they will deliver their multifarious works of art to be entered in the annual Arts by the Shore show. These works include paintings, pottery, jewelry, quilts, stained glass, wood working and so much more. Brunswick County, NC is blessed with so many skilled artists and Arts by the Shore is a great venue for you to see their work displayed. The show is open to the public on Friday, Saturday and at a reception on Sunday afternoon. Don’t miss it!

Speaking of art – you may not yet have heard about the opening of the Leland Cultural Arts Center in Leland, NC. At this center you can take classes in just about any artistic discipline you can think of. You will find classes in dancing, acting, poetry, writing, painting in several mediums, pottery and so much more. There is even a shop where some of the creative pieces made by Brunswick County, NC artists are sold. The center is well worth a stop to investigate. You may well be surprised by what you find there.

When people in Brunswick County, NC think of the word art, their thoughts invariably go to the Sunset River Marketplace in Sunset Beach, NC. This huge gallery is full of beautiful art pieces and includes things for your home decor, like furniture and pillows – all individually created by artists. You will marvel at the creative energy exuded by the wonderful works you will find here, and if it inspires your creative juices – all the better. You can take classes here as well.

DECORATING YOUR BEACH HOUSE

Decorating your new (or new to you) home can be so much fun, especially in Brunswick County, NC where locally owned shops with unique items abound. Yes, we have chain stores and furniture stores that also offer all kinds of household decorations for every room in the home as well as outdoors. But, if you are looking for something unique, I suggest shopping at the local stores. Even better – shop at the local galleries. The area is known for its abundance of artists in any number of genres. Excellent paintings and pottery are a given and you can find art made from driftwood, seashells, tin, wood, glass, bottles, aluminum, silver, used clothing, old flatware – just about any medium you can think of – and even some that you can’t! You can decorate your walls with beautiful paintings, your tables with interesting sculptures,  your windows with lovely stained glass, your deck with tinkling wind chimes, and enhance the fragrance of your bathrooms with sweet smelling handmade soaps. The ideas are endless as are the possibilities. Take your time – enjoy the process – and be open to the variety of art you will find.
