PIRATES, DOGS AND DESIGNS

On Saturday evening from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM, the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport will present Those Fiery Irish Pirates, the first of their monthly adult programs for 2018. You may know that if it had not been for pirates, there might never have been a St. Patrick. However, this program will focus on Grace O’Malley, Queen of the Pirates. You will create a pirate garden flag and enjoy refreshments with the other participants. The fee will be $25 for non-members and $12.50 for volunteers and members of Friends of the Museum. Call 910-744-5151 to register.

Do you want to take your best friend out for the day? Are you looking for a best friend? I recommend heading for Leland on Saturday morning. There, both you and your dog (on a leash) will enjoy Bark in the Park with all the other dogs and their owners from 10 AM until 1 PM. There will be adoptable dogs there from the Brunswick County’s Sheriff’s Office Animal Protective Service as well. You are welcome to bring dog food to donate to local shelters. Head on out and enjoy this social day together.

Keep your eyes peeled for the most colorful race of the year as the entrants in the Around Oak Island Sunfish Race make their circle of Oak Island, NC tomorrow, September 10. The race begins in the Southport Yacht Basin and the boats will be visible from the Oak Island beach as well as along the Intracoastal Waterway and from the old Oak Island Bridge depending on what time of day you are looking.

Leland, NC will hold their annual Founders’ Day Celebration tomorrow as well. Check it out for lots of free fun, entertainment, food and fireworks!

Sunday, September 11, will mark the 15th anniversary of the devastating events that occurred on that unforgettable date. Anyone who was not a small child at the time cannot help but remember the date. There will be some commemorative events held by towns, by VFWs and, I am certain, in churches throughout Brunswick County. NC. Even if you do not take part in an organized event, you can certainly take a few moments to think, to pray, to send peace and hope into the universe, and to remember those who suffered personally on this historic date.
