ART, POETRY, OPERA

This week Friday will be the day. The day when you may have to choose between events to attend, or, maybe you will be able to squeeze in a couple of events. The first First Friday Gallery Walk of 2018 will begin at 5 PM and end at 7 PM in downtown Southport, NC. Three galleries will be involved in this walk: Ricky Evans Gallery, Franklin Square Gallery and Lantana’s Gallery & Fine Gifts. Local Jewelry artist, Beth Zink, will be featured at Lantana’s. At Ricky Evan’s, Miniature Art Masterpieces by gallery artists will take center stage. While at Franklin Square Gallery you will enjoy the paintings and three dimensional objects in the Associated Artists of Southport Spring Art Show. You will even be able to witness the presentation of awards to the show winners. Also included in the evening will be delicious munchies and wine.

With sign-up beginning at 7 PM, Brunswick Little Theatre will be hosting their second Open Mic Poetry reading. At this event you will be able to read your own poetry; read poetry you enjoy that was written by someone else; or just be in the audience enjoying the poetry and encouraging the readers and writers.

GIVE THANKS – SHOP SMALL

Thanksgiving is nearly upon us and people are rushing around finishing their last minute grocery shopping or starting their cooking for the big day. We all have so much to be thankful for though we sometimes lose sight of that fact, so having a day set aside for giving thanks is helpful to get us remembering those things. Many people will be getting together with friends and family to share a bountiful meal, love and laughter. I would like you to remember that there are those who live alone and/or are ill who may be spending the day by themselves. What a lift it would be for them to receive a phone call – just to say I am thinking of you – I am thankful for you. While you are at it, be sure to thank the water and the earth and the ocean and the sky and the sun – and don’t forget the turkey.

The day after Thanksgiving, as you well know, is known as Black Friday. All the major stores have huge sales and it is recognized as the beginning of Christmas shopping. Yo may be big into Black Friday, but I would suggest that you think about the Shop Small weekend. Instead of fighting the crowds at the big stores, take a look at what your small shops have to offer and support your neighbors at the same time. Here is a list of shops you might want to check out:

Angelwing Needle Arts

Boo & Roo’s

Bullfrog Corner

Cape Fear Jewelers

Lantana’s Gallery & Fine Gifts

Ocean Outfitters

Bald Head Blues

Coastroad Hearth & Patio

Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 11 is Mother’s Day.

Mothers – we all have one. Mothers are responsible for our very lives. Some of us are lucky enough to have our mothers still living. All of us are lucky to have one. Wherever your mother may be, you can honor her. It really does not take much – a phone call, a card, a prayer, a lit candle, a visit, a dinner, a kiss, a hug, some flowers, a gift as simple as candy. Most mothers just appreciate the fact that you are thinking of them. Some restaurants offer special menus for Mother’s Day. Flower shops offer special arrangements. If you are thinking of a gift of jewelry this year you will find jewelry shops in the area that carry lovely pieces. Here are a few:
