Everywhere you look you see plants for sale – in department stores, in home improvement stores, in hardware stores, even in grocery stores. But if you want plants that were hand grown with loving care, at reasonable prices that will support a worthy school organization, you need to head out to South Brunswick High School where the Future Farmers of America are hosting their plant sale today (Thursday, 5/10) and tomorrow (Friday, 5/11). Don’t forget that Mothers’ Day is on Sunday and most mothers would love to have a live, flowering plant as a gift. The sale will run from 8 AM until 12:30 PM and from 2:30 PM until 5:30 PM both days. Plants you will find there include New Guinea Impatiens (and double impatiens), coleus, petunias, lavender, geraniums, begonias and verbena as well as sage, peppers, onions, mint, lemon thyme, tomatoes and sweet potato vines.
You can start the day off right on Saturday morning with a good breakfast and benefit the native plant garden at Caswell Beach Town Hall at the same time. The pancake and sausage breakfast will be held in the Caswell Dunes clubhouse and run from 7:30 AM until 11 AM at a cost of $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. You can also bid on silent auction items until noon and purchase that something special.
Beginning at 8 AM on Saturday, kids of all ages can take free surfing lessons. This ‘Take a Kid Surfing Day’ will be hosted by the South Brunswick High School Surf Dreams Club assisted by volunteers and members of the Oak Island Water Rescue. Kids can meet up at the SE 16th Street beach access in Oak Island, NC (near Ocean Crest Pier). Advance sign-up is recommended at: http://www.surfdreamsfoundation.org, however, you will be accepted without sign-up if there are available spots. For information, contact Jennifer Ordonez at 910-921-1065.
Don’t be surprised if you see a dog parade on Howe Street at 10 AM on Saturday in Southport, NC. It will be the beginning of the Rotary Club and Paws-Ability Woofstock Party to be held in Franklin Square Park from 10 AM until 3 PM. There will be live music, dog demos, pet store vendors, adoptable pets, and food trucks (Dawg Wagon and Hangar 17). The Brunswick County Search & Rescue group will be there and you can have a commemorative photo taken of you and your dog. $10 tickets can be purchased at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/woofstock-2018-tickets-45352935852.
