FLYING, FISHING & PUMPKINS

Most people who are spending a day at an airport are not happy about it. Most likely, they are there because they have to be there because of cancelled flights or other irritating events. But I am suggesting that you choose to spend at least part of this Saturday, October 14, at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport in Oak Island, NC. There will be happenings afoot. The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 939 will have a 1928 Ford Tri-Motor Aircraft available for your inspection and picture taking opportunities starting today, October 12 through Sunday, October 15. So, if Saturday is not a good day for you to stop by, you have three other days to do so. However, if you decide to make it on Saturday, you can also enjoy a pancake breakfast from 8:30 AM until 11 AM for a $5.00 fee. For free, you can enjoy the music of the Brunswick Big Band from 3 PM until 5 PM. You can also enjoy a flight aboard the airplane any of the four days of the event by booking in advance at FLYTHEFORD.ORG or by calling (877) 952-5395. Walk-up flights will be available for a bit more.

Also on Saturday, from 4 PM until 8 PM, you can enjoy the Barktoberfest at Check Six Brewing Company in Southport, NC.  At this event you will enjoy an Assistance Dog Demonstration, a puppy meet and greet, beer, music, food, a homemade dog biscuit giveaway and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will benefit Paws4vets.

For food, fun and fishing, check out the Fall brawl King Classic at the Ocean Isle Fishing Center in Ocean Isle Beach, NC. This event will begin on Friday, October 13 and will run through Sunday, October 15.

LIFE, CARS, MUSIC & FISH

Those of us who are blessed with good health often fail to appreciate it. We st take it for granted. However, many of us have family and friends who are struggling to maintain some semblance of normalcy in life because of their health problems. This struggle often takes place in solitude, behind closed doors. On Friday and Saturday, this weekend in Shallotte, NC, you have the opportunity to encourage and support these individuals in their struggles at the Relay for Life of Brunswick County event held at the West Brunswick High School. Be there.

On Saturday, in Southport, NC, classic car enthusiasts can enjoy the Annual Classic Car & Truck Show sponsored by the Cape Fear Cruisers. This show is held in the WalMart Shopping Center parking lot, making it convenient to your weekend shopping as well.

In the mood for music on a Saturday afternoon? Head on down to the Ocean Isle Beach Park Amphitheater in Ocean Isle Beach, NC for the Brunswick Concert Band Spring Concert. There, you can spend the afternoon in the open air listening to marches, melodies and moods.

Also in Ocean Isle Beach, NC, starting on Saturday and running throughout the week will be the Far Out Shoot Out Fishing Tournament hosted by the Ocean Isle Fishing Center. You can take part if you like, but even if you don’t, you will likely see lots of fishing craft on the sea next week.

FRIDAY, FINS N FUN

Yes, It’s Friday the 13th – but at least it’s Friday – and the beginning of a weekend of fun. You may know that there is a number of really good local bands who play at local venues every weekend. If you are like most people, when you live in a place for any length of time you often do not take advantage of available places or events thinking that you have plenty of time to do that. You may even find yourself stumped when a visitor asks, “What should I not miss?” Brunswick County, NC has so much to offer from the beaches to the Green Swamp; from the Ev Henwood Nature Preserve (http://leland.insiderinfo.us/sports-fitness-parks/parks/ev-henwood-nature-preserve/profile/) to Lake Waccamaw; from the New Hanover County line to the South Carolina line. And all of these places hold special events throughout the year. A good example is this coming weekend. There are so many events going on throughout the county that you would be hard pressed to attend all of them. Why not volunteer at the tournament – call Alison Scouler at 910-363-0011. How about fun on the beach that also benefits the Coastal Horizons Rape Crisis Center? You will find it on Oak Island at the Oak Island Barefoot Battle (http://southport.insiderinfo.us/annual-events/april/oak-island-barefoot-battle/profile/). You could stroll through the Southport Plein Air Paint Out and watch the artists at work. You could even buy one of the paintings at the Wet Paint Sale at Ft. Johnston. Attention Ladies!
