Bluefish, Oysters & Pumpkins

Matthew has come and gone and though he has inconvenienced many of us in Brunswick County, NC, we have been very lucky. We can be thankful, enjoy the lovely Fall weather that arrived in his wake, and look forward to tomorrow. The weekend is nearly here and it offers three very different events for us to enjoy. First up is the Bluefish Bonanza Surfcasting Tournament on Bald Head Island, NC on Saturday and Sunday. Onsite registration begins today and there is even a fishing school from 3 PM until  5 PM today. The folks at the Maritime Market say, “During this time of year, the fish are so thick, you have to hide behind a dune just to bait your hook :)”

EASTER WEEK

Spring has sprung! The Bradford Pear Trees have burst into their blooming glory. Daffodils are up. The Forsythia is budding out. The days are warmer and Easter is almost here – yes, it’s early this year. And the events that usually take place around Easter time are early, too. On Bald Head Island, NC the BHI Conservancy’s Easter Turtle Trot family fun run and 5K race will take place on Saturday, March 26, with registration beginning at 8:30 AM. This race will begin a full day of events on the island. Then from 10 AM until 5 Pm you can check out the BHI Artisans Show & Sale at the Association. The BHI Easter Egg Hunt will be held from 3 PM until 5 PM at the Common at Cape Fear Station.

In Southport, NC, you won’t want to miss the Southport Spring Festival & Azalea Sale held in the lovely Franklin Square Park on Friday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26, from 10 AM until 5 PM.

Spring also signifies the opening of some of our favorite restaurants that have been closed for the winter and we definitely welcome them back. We also welcome the visitors that Easter seems to awaken to the fact of our beautiful area. Because many schools are closed for spring break during Easter week, visitors with families tend to start arriving around that time. Here are a few ideas for some fun things to do with your children during Easter week (besides going to the beach!).

Have fun at a park – you will find many from which to choose.

Take a tour in a golf cart, on a bicycle or in the air.

Visit the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Coastal Carolina and the Ingram Planetarium.

And don’t forget the ice cream!

FOR ADULTS ONLY…..

Now that I have your attention….. Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while are bound to know that I have nothing against kids. In fact, our website has a Kidstuff section with all kinds of events, attractions and amusements geared especially to kids. You will find art related activities; outdoors activities; fun learning activities (but don’t tell the kids); fishing activities; summer camps and the best places to find ice cream and smoothies.

Kids are fun and it’s great to spend time with them, however, sometimes we need some time for ourselves. Not only time alone, but time to enjoy our adult friends and do adult things. Things like going to an adult movie; having a quiet dinner out; going to a concert; going to a play; going out dancing and having drinks in an adults only atmosphere. There are many places in Brunswick County, NC where we can do those things and that’s a good thing. Making special plans is a good thing as well. Hire a sitter, if necessary, make your reservations and head on out to a couple of upcoming events. The first two do require purchase of tickets in advance, so get on the ball. You’ll be glad you did.

This Saturday you can enjoy Las Vegas Night in Supply, NC, while supporting a good cause:

On Friday, February 5, you can have fun Mardi Gras style in the Town of Oak Island:

For a later night out, check out Slainte (open until 2 AM) in Southport, NC:
