For generations, wooden boats and the fishing industry sustained coastal Brunswick County, NC. In Southport, NC, fishing for menhaden, specifically, fueled the local economy along with the shrimping industry. We can still see the wooden shrimp boats plying the waters of the Atlantic, however, they, too are a dying breed. But folks here are proud of their heritage and of the wooden boats that were such a big part of it. To this day these boats are celebrated and continue to be built by talented craftsmen. You can take part in a special recognition of the boats at the Southport Wooden Boat Show tomorrow, Saturday, September 24. Don’t miss it.

Sunset Beach, NC is also holding a water related festival tomorrow. The Sunset Beach Paddle Fest will be filled with family fun as well as water races with prizes. Another beautiful way to spend your Saturday with family – and enter you pet in a pet costume contest. Even better – the proceeds benefit local charities.
