If are looking for something fun to do in Brunswick County, NC it’s a good bet that you will find it provided by the Parks and Recreation Departments of the towns. The employees of these departments are fun loving individuals who come up with ideas – and carry out those ideas – for events that are available to you on a continuing basis. You will find information about some of those upcoming events here.

Town of Oak Island, NC Parks and Recreation:
If you have missed the Summer Concert Series up to this point do not despair, there will be three more Friday evening concerts (6:30 PM – 8:30 PM) at Middleton Park. Those dates are 8/10, 8/17 and 8/24.
On 8/11, 8/16 and 8/25 you can check out Nature is Wild About Reading at the Oak Island Nature Center. Here, kids can listen to stories and make fun crafts from 11 AM until noon. Topics include: 8/11 – Seashells, 8/16 – Land and Sea Turtles, 8/25 – Trees, Leaves and Bark. Please preregister kids ages 4 and up at 278-5518.
On 8/14 at 6 PM you might enjoy the Turtle Talk offered by the OKI Sea Turtle Protection Program.
Interested in the coastal birds? Here’s one for you:

8/15 from 2 PM until 3:30 PM you can learn all the tips and tricks of Bird Photography at a free program. You will also get tips on places nearby where you can find birds to photograph, how to stage your backyard to welcome birds, and understanding bird behavior.
How about a trip to Lake Waccamaw (fee $5) on 8/23 from 9 AM until 2 PM to see Alligators Up Close & Personal? (preregistration required)
And don’t forget the Labor Day Surf Off on 9/1.

Boiling Spring Lakes, NC Parks and Recreation:
The Monthly Birthday Ice Cream Social is held from 12:30 PM until 1 PM the second Friday of each month. Come on out and celebrate with an ice cream sundae.
Karate for Kids is held on Mondays from 6 PM until 7 PM from August 13 through December 17.
Put your dancing shoes on and join the Line Dancing on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM.
Bring your lunch and enjoy Brown Bag Lunch and a Movie on 8/16 from 11 AM until 2 PM.
Come to Dress Like a Nerd Day and enjoy lunch and maybe win a prize on 8/22 from 12 noon until 1 PM.
Get your friends together and join in the fun for Afternoon Adult Trivia on 8/23 from 11 AM until 2 PM. Pizza, salad and cash prizes will be offered. ($5 and RSVP by 8/20)

CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE

Yes, the 4th of July is more than a week away, however, if you are familiar with the NC 4th of July Festival in Southport, NC, you know it runs for a week or more. Festivities will begin this Friday, June 24, with music by the Brunswick Concert Band. The concert will be held at 7 PM in Franklin Square Park. On Saturday, June 25, opening ceremonies will be held at Waterfront Park and the N.C. Fourth of July Festival Freedom Run will begin there as well. Saturday also begins the historic Chapel of Cross at St. Philip’s self guided tours, which will continue throughout the festival.

Beginning at 7:30 PM on Saturday evening you can enjoy a Patriotic Concert by the Sea Notes Choral Society at the Brunswick Community College Odell Williamson Auditorium in Bolivia, NC. If you can’t make it on Saturday evening, there will be a repeat performance on Sunday, June 26, at 3 PM. Also on Sunday, you can experience a reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Fort Johnston Garrison lawn at 4:45 PM followed by a military band concert at 5 PM.

 Don’t forget to stop by the Oak Island Farmers’ Market on Monday morning to purchase all your local goodies for the upcoming holiday.

Mike’s Garage Band has made quite a name for itself in Brunswick County, NC – a good name. It’s a great band whose members play for free and donate all proceeds from their playing, and your fun dancing, to worthy causes. This Saturday, November 21, is no exception as they present A 60s/Oldies Dance Party at the Brunswick Community College South Brunswick Islands Center in Carolina Shores, NC, with all proceeds going to the Brunswick County Literacy Council. The cost is only $10 per person and reservations and payment can be made at: http://www.bcliteracy.org. For information, call: (910) 754-7323.

At 7:30 PM on Friday, November 20, you can attend a Star Party at the Ingram Planetarium in Sunset Beach, NC. You can bring your own telescope or use the planetarium’s telescopes. Hopeful viewing includes the moon, of course, Orion, Canis Major and Canis Minor and more. The rain date is Saturday, November 21 at 7 PM. On Saturday, November 21, kids can go flying at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport in Oak Island, NC! Pilots and volunteers with the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 939 will be on hand from 10 AM until 1 PM to take to the skies with kids ages 8 through 17. Each kid will need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian – not for the flight – but to sign the registration form. Don’t let your kids miss out on this opportunity! On Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21, from 10 AM until 6 PM, the shops of the Watertower District in Southport, NC, will hold their Christmas Open House. You will find weekend specials, refreshments and $180 in gift certificates will be given away. It’s not too early to shop for the holidays. Some shops included are: Anastasio’s Glass Studio, Howe Outrageous Art Gallery & Marketplace, Magnolia Gifts & Antiques, and Rebecca’s.

You will have two chances to hear the Brunswick Concert Band perform its Fall into Winter concert this weekend. The first concert will be held on Friday, November 20, at 7:30 PM at Hatch Auditorium in Caswell Beach, NC. The second will be held on Sunday, November 22, at 3 PM at Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College in Bolivia, NC.
