The Memorial Day Holiday is a good time to enjoy the freedoms afforded us by those who served our country in the armed forces – don’t forget to honor them. Southport, NC will hold two Memorial Day events on Monday, May 28. A parade will begin at 10:30 AM at the corner of 10th and Lord Streets. At 11 AM, at the end of the parade, there will be a memorial ceremony at the John N. Smith Cemetery on Leonard Street. At 2 PM the annual Days of Remembrance will be held at the Southport Community Center after which hot apple pie and ice cream will be served.

Bald Head Island, NC will hold their traditional Memorial Day service at the Old Baldy Lighthouse beginning at 11:30 AM and will include music by the Village Chapel Choir.

In Boiling Spring Lakes, NC you can attend a Memorial Day Service at VFW Post 10400, 3161 George II Highway, beginning at 11 AM.

Today, May 24, you can experience the music of The Tams at the Brunswick County Free Concert in Leland Municipal Park, 102 Town Hall Drive, in Leland, NC beginning at 6:30 PM.

Tomorrow, Friday, May 25, beginning at 5 PM, the New York Times best selling author, Mary Alice Monroe, will be signing copies of her recent novel, Beach House Reunion, at the Silver Coast Winery in Ocean Isle Beach, NC. The story is set during the time of sea turtle nesting. This event is presented by the Pelican Book Store and cost is $7.50 which includes a free glass of wine.

On Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy the Smith Island Art League Memorial Day Show on Bald Head Island, NC. On Memorial Day you can beach it all day if you like, then head on out to Franklin Square Park in Southport, NC for Jimmy Buffet and beach music by Parrot Party at the Southport Summer Concert in Franklin Square Park.

SPRING FLING, SPRING SWING (NOT) & MORE

If you still need plants for your yard, you might want to check out the Native Plant Seminar and Plant Sale on Friday or Saturday at the Brunswick County Government Center, Building N, 25 Referendum Drive in Bolivia, NC. The seminar will begin at 8:30 AM both days and the plant sale will be held behind the building from 11 AM until 4 PM both days. You will find native perennials and shrubs as well as plants like Coneflowers and Black-eyed Susans.

Are you interested in an Historical Southport Bicycle Tour?  You can register by calling the Adventure Kayak Company, Inc. to take part on Saturday, in Southport, NC, beginning at 9 AM. The kayak company and the Maritime Museum have teamed up to offer the tour at a cost of  $20 if you have your own bike, or $28 to rent a bike and helmet.

Boiling Spring Lakes, NC will be holding their Spring Fling at the Lakes on Saturday from 10 AM until 3 PM with fun for the whole family.

Also on Saturday, you can join hands with like minded individuals and take part in Hands Across the Sand on Oak Island, NC. This event is held to demonstrate for environmental protection for the ocean and beaches. You can meet at the gazebo on SE 48th Street at 11:30 AM and the event will be held from 12 noon until 12:15 PM.

The Boiling Spring Lakes, NC Parks and Recreation Department will present Concerts at the Lake on Sunday from 4 PM until 6 PM at Spring Lake Park in Boiling Spring Lakes, NC. Music will be provided by Artistry in Jazz.

On Sunday from 1 PM until 5 PM you can participate in the Oak Island, NC Beautification Club Garden Tour. This self guided driving tour will take you to eight gardens as well as the May Moore Park. The tour will begin at the Oak Island Recreation Center where refreshments will be served and tour maps will be available for the $10 fee for the tour.

Also on Sunday, at 3 PM will be your last chance to enjoy Brunswick Little Theatre‘s Musical Theatre Apprentices in the production, That’s Entertainment in Southport, NC. This musical review will include popular numbers from Chicago, A Chorus Line, Something’s Rotten and more. Cost is $10 at the door.

EASTER EGGS, CASH MOB AND ‘UNFORGETTABLE’ MUSIC

Easter, as you know, is early this year – and so are the Easter Egg Hunts. Several of them will be taking place this Saturday, March 24. These include events in Southport, NC, Boiling Spring Lakes, NC, Shallotte, NC and Calabash, NC. The Southport Parks & Receration Easter Egg Hunt is actually two hunts – one at 10 AM in Franklin Square Park for ages 6 – 12, and the second will follow immediately at the  Fort Johnston Garrison lawn for ages 5 and younger at . In Shallotte, NC the egg hunt will be included in the BunnyDayze event in Mulberry Park beginning at 10 AM. This event will include Easter Egg dyeing and you will have a chance to meet the Easter Bunny. The Calabash Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 11 AM in the Calabash Community Park (868 Persimmon Rd.). Bring your own basket and meet the Easter Bunny.

Do you enjoy shopping? Why not take part in the March Cash Mob on Saturday? It is open to the public but you must agree to spend $20 in the shop. What shop? Ahh, that remains secret until the day of the event. The meet-up location for this event will be South Harbour Village Marina at 11 AM. After the event you can lunch with other participants at a local restaurant if you like.

On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the Sea Notes Choral Society will be singing their hearts out at Brunswick Community College Odell Williamson Auditorium in Bolivia, NC. Their Spring Concert this year is entitled ‘Unforgettable’ and will include Bridge Over Troubled Water, Rainy Days and Mondays, Feelin’ Groovy, and more Broadway and movie numbers. Doors will open at 2:15 PM and the show will begin at 3 PM. The program is free and no tickets are required.

CHOICES, CHOICES, CHOICES

If you live in Brunswick County, NC and you are looking for something to do this weekend, you will have plenty of choices. On Saturday, you might want to head out to Franklin Square Park in Southport, NC to Participate in the Southport observance of International Peace Day from 2 PM until 4 PM.  Rev and Jeremy Truett will both be performing throughout the event. There will be children’s activities as well as a children’s art exhibit inside Franklin Square Gallery. In the event of rain, the observance will be held inside the Southport Community Building.

From 9 AM until 12 noon on Saturday, you can enjoy the Oak Island, NC beach while helping the Oak Island Beach Preservation Society by taking part in their observance of International Coastal Cleanup Day. To participate, either email beachoki@outlook.com or show up at the beach society’s tent at the Town of Oak Island cabana at the foot of 46th Street on Saturday morning.

Fun for kids seems to be the order of the day on Saturday as there will be two more events focusing on kids that day. One of them will be the Kiwanis Big Toy Day to be held at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport in Oak Island, NC from 10 AM until 3 PM. There will be lots of fun things for kids to do, including small craft airplane flights.

The second event will have a totally different focus. It will be the opening of Go Chicken Coop located at 7 Bell Swamp Connection in Winnabow, NC. (Look for the 9 foot tall roadside gold chicken on U.S. 17) The venue will be open from 10 AM until 6 PM Saturdays and Sundays through November 19 with farm themed fun for the whole family. Activities will include hayrides, a farm train, corn hole, a corn maze, fall festival games, sack races and more.

The air will be filled with music on Saturday evening. Mike’s Garage Band will hold a fundraising concert for the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport from 5:30 PM until 9:30 PM. This free event will be held at Woodlands Park Amphitheater in St. James. Bring your picnics and drinks and enjoy the music and raffles. Non-residents of St. James will need to register by calling 910-457-0003. Entrance for non-residents will be at the Seaside gate off Middleton Boulevard.

The cast of ‘It’s Gotta be Rock and Roll Music’ will hold encore performances of that event at the Amuzu Theatre in Southport, NC beginning Thursday, 9/14 through Sunday, 9/17. Shows will begin at 7:30 PM, Thursday through Saturday and at 3 PM on Sunday. Tickets will be available at Ricky Evans Art Gallery and Color Me Carolina.

Check Six Brewing Company in Southport, NC will offer Trivia Night on Thursday beginning at 7:30 PM; Karaoke on Friday from 7:30 PM until 11:30 PM; and live music on Saturday night beginning at 7:30 PM.

Elvis is alive and well and you can see him in Southport, NC on Friday evening from 6 PM until 9 PM. Elvis and Friends will perform at the St. James Community Center where there will be food, raffles, auctions and dancing and you can BYOB. This event will benefit WAVES 4 K.I.D.S. and tickets can be purchased at www waves4kids.org or on their Facebook page.

MUSIC, BOOKS AND CARS

A couple of fun musical events will be happening today, Friday, July 28, 2017 – one in Southport, NC and the other in Bald Head Island, NC. The popular, local Mike’s Garage Band will be playing at the Rescues United Furr Jam from 5:30 PM until 9:30 PM at the Woodlands Park Amphitheater in St. James for a good cause. There is a cash fee of $10 for this event and money raised will benefit Southport-Oak Island Animal Rescue, Paws Place Dog Rescue, and the Brunswick County Sheriffs Animal Protective Service medical fund. You can still purchase the required $10 wristbands at Paws Place and SOAR during business hours. You are invited to bring your own picnic and beverages or to purchase food from vendors who will be available at the concert.

The Bald Head Island Friends of Music concert for July will be presented this evening at the Village Chapel. This free concert, which features the Watermark Ensemble, will begin at 7:30 PM and is open to the public.

Did you know that the Friends of the Library/Southport and Oak Island holds a used book sale every month from 9 AM until noon? This month the sale will be on Saturday, July 29 and, as always, it will be held at Southport Realty, 727 N. Howe St. in Southport, NC. “Foodie Fiction” is the theme this month. All books that include food, cooking or ingredients in their titles will sell for half price. You can also drop off any used books you wish to donate.

Two events that include music will be held on Wednesday, August 2 (yes, it’s almost here!). At 2 PM in Franklin Square Park, in Southport, NC, you can enjoy the concert you missed due to cancellation during the July 4 celebration. This free concert by the Second Marine Aircraft wing Band is not to be missed.

On Wednesday evening, from 6 PM until 9 PM, the Wheels by the Sea car club will hold their Show and Shine Cruise. The event, which will include a DJ, will be held at 5130 Southport-Supply Rd., SE, Southport, NC. Cars, trucks and motorcycles are invited to take part. PIRATES, SUNRISE & SMOKEY JOE’S

 

Pirates will be plying the waters of the Cape Fear area this weekend, just like they did in the 17th and 18th centuries, and you can join in the fun at the Bald head Island Pirate Invasion in Bald head Island, NC. The swords are real, the cannons are real and the blunderbusses are real – part of a fun living history event. From Friday through Sunday there will be a variety of events suitable for all ages including parties, pirate musical bands and so much more. The Sea Notes Choral Society and the Brunswick Concert Band will join together in a musical celebration this weekend for your enjoyment. You can choose either Saturday or Sunday to attend. Concerts both days will begin at 3 PM at the Odell Williamson Auditorium on the Brunswick Community College campus in Bolivia, NC. This summer concert, Sunrise Over America, is free, as are all of the concerts presented by both groups, however, donations are accepted.

Smokey Joe’s Cafe, the longest running musical revue on Broadway, is being presented by local performers at the Brunswick Little Theatre right here in Southport, NC. You still have plenty of chances to catch this enjoyable production but reservations are strongly suggested. Remaining shows are scheduled on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM and on Sunday at 3 PM. Tickets can be purchased on the theatre website or at the following locations: Ricky Evans Gallery 211 in Southport, NC and Sugar Confections Bakery in Shallotte, NC. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students with ID.

APRIL FOOL!

No fooling! Saturday is April 1st and some fun things are going on in Southport, NC for kids and adults alike. Take your kids, grandkids, and that kid inside yourself to Franklin Square Park for Kids Day. This event, sponsored by Associated Artists of Southport and Brunswick County Smart Start begins at 11 AM. You will find lots of fun activities, interactive storytelling, and hot dogs and drinks for sale by the Trolly Stop.

Saturday is also Civil War Trust Park Day and the NC Maritime Museum at Southport is reaching out to those who would like to help them out beginning at 9 AM. As a volunteer, you will be cleaning up the grounds, planting flowers, working on special services projects, painting, and planting herbs and vegetables. If you have yard tools, please bring them with you. As a reward, you will receive a free Park Day tee shirt and a hot dog lunch. Please call 457-0003 to pre-register.
