Golf is not everyone’s game. However, it is certainly popular in southeastern, NC, evidenced by the number of golf communities in the area  – and the people who live in them. Did you know that the game is considered to have been invented by the Scots? “A spokesman for the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, one of the oldest Scottish golf organisations, said “Stick and ball games have been around for many centuries, but golf as we know it today, played over 18 holes, clearly originated in Scotland.” In 1739, the game spread to (what is now) the United States with a shipment of clubs and balls to South Carolina and the establishment of the South Carolina Golf Club in Charleston in 1787. The game became very popular in the Roaring Twenties and the number of golf clubs have been growing ever since that time.*

FLYING, FISHING & PUMPKINS

Most people who are spending a day at an airport are not happy about it. Most likely, they are there because they have to be there because of cancelled flights or other irritating events. But I am suggesting that you choose to spend at least part of this Saturday, October 14, at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport in Oak Island, NC. There will be happenings afoot. The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 939 will have a 1928 Ford Tri-Motor Aircraft available for your inspection and picture taking opportunities starting today, October 12 through Sunday, October 15. For free, you can enjoy the music of the Brunswick Big Band from 3 PM until 5 PM. You can also enjoy a flight aboard the airplane any of the four days of the event by booking in advance at FLYTHEFORD.ORG or by calling (877) 952-5395. Walk-up flights will be available for a bit more.

Also on Saturday, from 4 PM until 8 PM, you can enjoy the Barktoberfest at Check Six Brewing Company in Southport, NC.  At this event you will enjoy an Assistance Dog Demonstration, a puppy meet and greet, beer, music, food, a homemade dog biscuit giveaway and a 50/50 raffle. MOTHERS, KAYAKS & MUSIC

No matter what your relationship with your mother, we all have one. We all owe our lives to our mothers – none of us would be here without them. So, each year a day is set aside to honor mothers and this year that day is Sunday. There are so many ways we can show our appreciation and I think, if at all possible, the most important is to spend time with your mother. The gift of your presence would mean more to her than flowers, cards, a meal, candy – any of the traditional kinds of gifts. That said, however, you might want to think about showing up with some yummy goodies from one of our local bakeries. In Southport, NC, you will find sweet treats at Burney’s Bakery and The Confectionary. In Shallotte, NC, you can feed her sweet tooth at Sugar Confections Bakery. In Ocean Isle Beach, NC, check out Seaside Bakery. In Calabash, NC, the place for sweets is Maude’s Country Delights.

On Saturday, you can Ride the Tide in the Davis Canal in Oak Island, NC. If you have a mom who likes kayaking you can take her as well. The more the merrier. What a beautiful and fun way to spend the day outdoors and take advantage of the natural blessings of North Carolina.

If Kayaking is not your thing, or your mom’s, if music is your preference, that is on offer as well. The Brunswick Concert Band Spring Concert will take place on Saturday at 3 PM at the Brunswick Community College Odell Williamson Auditorium in Bolivia, NC, with some foot tapping and beautiful music.
