If you still need plants for your yard, you might want to check out the Native Plant Seminar and Plant Sale on Friday or Saturday at the Brunswick County Government Center, Building N, 25 Referendum Drive in Bolivia, NC. The seminar will begin at 8:30 AM both days and the plant sale will be held behind the building from 11 AM until 4 PM both days. You will find native perennials and shrubs as well as plants like Coneflowers and Black-eyed Susans.

Are you interested in an Historical Southport Bicycle Tour?  You can register by calling the Adventure Kayak Company, Inc. to take part on Saturday, in Southport, NC, beginning at 9 AM. The kayak company and the Maritime Museum have teamed up to offer the tour at a cost of  $20 if you have your own bike, or $28 to rent a bike and helmet.

Boiling Spring Lakes, NC will be holding their Spring Fling at the Lakes on Saturday from 10 AM until 3 PM with fun for the whole family.

Also on Saturday, you can join hands with like minded individuals and take part in Hands Across the Sand on Oak Island, NC. This event is held to demonstrate for environmental protection for the ocean and beaches. You can meet at the gazebo on SE 48th Street at 11:30 AM and the event will be held from 12 noon until 12:15 PM.

The Boiling Spring Lakes, NC Parks and Recreation Department will present Concerts at the Lake on Sunday from 4 PM until 6 PM at Spring Lake Park in Boiling Spring Lakes, NC. Music will be provided by Artistry in Jazz.

On Sunday from 1 PM until 5 PM you can participate in the Oak Island, NC Beautification Club Garden Tour. This self guided driving tour will take you to eight gardens as well as the May Moore Park. The tour will begin at the Oak Island Recreation Center where refreshments will be served and tour maps will be available for the $10 fee for the tour.

Also on Sunday, at 3 PM will be your last chance to enjoy Brunswick Little Theatre‘s Musical Theatre Apprentices in the production, That’s Entertainment in Southport, NC. This musical review will include popular numbers from Chicago, A Chorus Line, Something’s Rotten and more. Cost is $10 at the door.

CARS, 1/2 MARATHON, MUSIC AND THE EARTH

T.here are lots of events to choose from this weekend in Brunswick County, NC and the fun begins on Thursday evening. At 7:30 PM, the Brunswick Concert Band will give the first performance of their Spring Concert at Brunswick Community College Odell Williamson Auditorium in Bolivia, NC.

On Friday, you can celebrate this wonderful planet on which we live at the Oak Island Earth Day event in Middleton Park, Oak Island, NC. The event will run from 10 AM until 2 PM and will include a variety of hands on activities and displays.

If you live up Leland, NC way, you might want to check out their Plant Giveaway on Saturday Morning beginning at 10 AM. You can beautify your property for free.

The fun of Saturday’s Oak Island Lighthouse 1/2 Marathon 10K/5K Run/Walk will actually begin on Friday evening at 5 PM with the Packet Pickup and Onsite Registration at Middleton Park in Oak Island, NC. The races will begin on Saturday at 7:30 AM, but start times are staggered depending on which race you choose to enter.

If you are planning Saturday morning shopping in Shallotte, NC, you can enjoy the Bash at the Beach at the same time. This event, held at the Home Depot Shopping Center by the Tri-Beach Cruisers Car Club, is especially fun for car enthusiasts – or might make you into one.

The Brunswick Concert Band will reprise their Spring Concert at Hatch Auditorium in Caswell Beach, NC on Saturday at 3 PM, so don’t despair if you are unable to make the
Thursday concert. Enthusiasts may even want to attend both concerts. Either way, donations will be gratefully accepted at these free concerts.

EASTER EGGS, CASH MOB AND ‘UNFORGETTABLE’ MUSIC

Easter, as you know, is early this year – and so are the Easter Egg Hunts. Several of them will be taking place this Saturday, March 24. These include events in Southport, NC, Boiling Spring Lakes, NC, Shallotte, NC and Calabash, NC. The Southport Parks & Receration Easter Egg Hunt is actually two hunts – one at 10 AM in Franklin Square Park for ages 6 – 12, and the second will follow immediately at the  Fort Johnston Garrison lawn for ages 5 and younger at . In Shallotte, NC the egg hunt will be included in the BunnyDayze event in Mulberry Park beginning at 10 AM. This event will include Easter Egg dyeing and you will have a chance to meet the Easter Bunny. The Calabash Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 11 AM in the Calabash Community Park (868 Persimmon Rd.). Bring your own basket and meet the Easter Bunny.

Do you enjoy shopping? Why not take part in the March Cash Mob on Saturday? It is open to the public but you must agree to spend $20 in the shop. What shop? Ahh, that remains secret until the day of the event. The meet-up location for this event will be South Harbour Village Marina at 11 AM. After the event you can lunch with other participants at a local restaurant if you like.

On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the Sea Notes Choral Society will be singing their hearts out at Brunswick Community College Odell Williamson Auditorium in Bolivia, NC. Their Spring Concert this year is entitled ‘Unforgettable’ and will include Bridge Over Troubled Water, Rainy Days and Mondays, Feelin’ Groovy, and more Broadway and movie numbers. Doors will open at 2:15 PM and the show will begin at 3 PM. The program is free and no tickets are required.

CHRISTMAS VILLAGE & REINDEER

The days are flying by as Christmas approaches and people are busy getting ready for their own special celebrations. As you are doing this, don’t forget to enjoy each day. On Saturday, December 16, you can purchase those last minute decorations and gifts while enjoying the day at the same time. Just head into Shallotte, NC to the new Christmas Village in Mulberry Park at 123 Mulberry Street. From 11 Am until 3 PM you can visit 50 vendors and purchase holiday decorations, gifts, veggies, cider and more. Got an ugly Christmas sweater? Want to show it off? Like to run races? Check out the Southport Ugly Sweater 5K and Reindeer Run (a 1 mile walk/run) with or without antlers. The run begins Saturday, December 16 at 8 AM on Bay Street in Southport, NC, so signup at coastalraceproductions.com (use code Southport20). Coffee, hot chocolate and cookies will be available after the race and the event supports the NC Fourth of July Festival.

If you are yearning to attend just one more Christmas Parade, you are in luck.  Bolivia, NC will hold its Christmas Parade beginning at 6 PM on Saturday, December 16. The parade will begin at the Brunswick County Government Center and follow Old Ocean Highway to Bolivia. Enjoy!

TREE LIGHTINGS & PARADES

Tomorrow is December 1st, the Christmas season is upon us and it will be starting with a busy first weekend. The Oak Island Christmas Tree Lighting events will begin at 5:30 PM tomorrow at Middleton Park in the Town of Oak Island, NC. If your kids participate in the Gingerbread Beach House Contest (four divisions: ages 6-12, 1-17, 18 & up, and families) at the Oak Island Recreation Center, they will receive their prizes at the tree lighting and their gingerbread houses will be on display from 12/1 through 12/56.

The last 1st Friday Gallery Walk of the year will take place in Southport, NC on Friday as well Beginning at 5 PM you can stroll the streets enjoying the holiday decorations and stop in each gallery for food, drink and that special Christmas gift you have not been able to find anywhere else.

If you live in or near Calabash, NC, on Friday evening you can enjoy the Calabash Tree Lighting & Spirit of Calabash Parade all rolled into one.

On Saturday, December 2, you and your family can head out to Oak Island, NC to enjoy the Christmas by the Sea Parade beginning at 2 PM. You can head on out to the Boiling Spring Lakes Community Center at 5 PM to take part in their Christmas Festival until 8 PM. Don’t forget the Sea Notes Holiday Concert, Peace on Earth. Don’t worry if you can’t make the 3 PM Concert on Saturday, December 2 at the Odell Williamson Auditorium in Bolivia, NC – they will be doing it all again on Sunday December 3, same time, same place.

Also, on Sunday, December 3, the Oak Island Beautification Club will hold a holiday bake sale and craft bazaar at the Oak Island Recreation Center in Oak Island, NC, from noon until 4 PM.

FISHING TOURNAMENTS & FARM TOUR

Fishing tournament season is upon us and the fun begins today, October 5, in Southport, NC, with the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament registration, entertainment and captains meeting at the Southport Marina. Fishing will begin on Friday with more entertainment on Saturday afternoon and the awards ceremony on Saturday evening. As you can see, this event is not just for the fishermen. It’s an enjoyable time for everyone.

Also, on Saturday, your kids up to age 15 can enjoy the fun of fishing, from 10 AM until noon, on the City Pier, in Southport, NC, at Captain Charlie’s Kids Fishing Tournament.  This is a great way to get your kids hooked on fishing. They might even win the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament someday.

On Saturday afternoon, from 3 PM until 5 PM, you can enjoy the Farm Tapas and Farm Tour at Greenlands Farm on Midway Road, in Bolivia, NC. There is a fee and reservations are required (910-253-7934). You can learn about sustainable farming; meet the rescued farm animals and free range chickens; see a goat milking demonstration and more. Proceeds benefit HOOF, their non-profit farm animal sanctuary.

CULTURES, SUNFISH & WOODEN BOATS

September will be going out with a bang this weekend with lots of fun things to do. Don’t miss out. The fun will begin on Friday evening with the first performance presented through the auspices of the Brunswick County Intercultural Festival. Beginning at 7 PM, the African American Dance Ensemble will perform at the Odell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick Community College in Bolivia, NC. On Saturday, from 10 AM until 4 PM you can enjoy the festival on the grounds of the auditorium with dancing, cultural events, food and more. Take the kids for a fun and informative day.

If you enjoy fishing, you might want to check out the Bay Creek Classic beginning with the captain’s meeting on Friday at 4 PM. Lines in the water from 7 AM until 4:30 PM on Saturday and the proceeds go for a good cause.

Saturday also offers the Around Oak Island Sunfish Race. Open to all experienced sunfish sailors, this 27+ mile race starts in the Yacht Basin in Southport, NC.

Begun eight years ago, the Southport Wooden Boat Show has grown exponentially over the years. At this year’s event you will enjoy all the activities you enjoyed in previous shows as well as new activities, including more maritime activities. There will be a designated handicapped parking area as well as a shuttle bus to take you to the event site in the Old yacht Basin. This is a family friendly event with fun for everyone.
