HAVE FUN VOLUNTEERING ON THE BEACH

We love living at the beach – more specifically in Oak Island, NC. There are so many people who would love to be in our shoes. And I believe that it is important for us to give back. Sometimes, when you hear the word ‘volunteer’ you want to turn around and run. Did you ever consider that you could be doing something that you love and be volunteering at the same time? The Town of Oak Island has a need for some volunteers. Why not take a look and see if there is something the town needs that you can enjoy providing?

The Run Oak Island event is coming up in Mid February. The Oak Island Recreation Department will be running this event. As you know, the recreation department does an excellent job, however, they are really in need of some help for this event. You can offer runner support; you can man a water station; you can help in a myriad if other the day before and the day of the race. Best of all you will receive a free T-shirt. Just call, stop by, or email cwinkler@ci.oak-island.nc.us.

If you love being at the beach, there is a whole raft of things you can volunteer to do that will allow you to enjoy the sun and sand. The town is asking you to complete an application in February so that they may have assignments in place by May. You can pick up an application at the town hall or find it on the town website. (http://www.oakislandnc.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Volunteer-Application.pdf) Here is a list provided by the town:
Traffic or parking control with police or firefighters
Riding on fire trucks in parades or representing the department at community events
Staffing informational booths at festivals or helping with recreational activities
Walking the strand and explaining rules to visitors as Beach Ambassadors
Filing, making calls and other administrative duties at various departments
Other service opportunities
(And remember, volunteer service counts as work experience on your resume)
You can contact Rose Braam at 910-201-8015 or rbraam@ci.oak-island.nc.us.

Oak Island folks (and neighboring areas) should consider joining the Beach Preservation Society and possibly becoming a committee member in the future. See link below – Be a Beach Lover!
