GIVE THANKS – SHOP SMALL

Thanksgiving is nearly upon us and people are rushing around finishing their last minute grocery shopping or starting their cooking for the big day. We all have so much to be thankful for though we sometimes lose sight of that fact, so having a day set aside for giving thanks is helpful to get us remembering those things. Many people will be getting together with friends and family to share a bountiful meal, love and laughter. I would like you to remember that there are those who live alone and/or are ill who may be spending the day by themselves. What a lift it would be for them to receive a phone call – just to say I am thinking of you – I am thankful for you. While you are at it, be sure to thank the water and the earth and the ocean and the sky and the sun – and don’t forget the turkey.

The day after Thanksgiving, as you well know, is known as Black Friday. All the major stores have huge sales and it is recognized as the beginning of Christmas shopping. Yo may be big into Black Friday, but I would suggest that you think about the Shop Small weekend. Instead of fighting the crowds at the big stores, take a look at what your small shops have to offer and support your neighbors at the same time. Here is a list of shops you might want to check out:

Bullfrog Corner

GIFTS, FOOD & MUSIC

No, it’s not too early, especially if you, like me, need to send your gifts and greetings to other parts of the country – or even the world. There are several events coming up this weekend where you can begin your search right here in Brunswick County, NC for the perfect gift – and the perfect food – which, may turn out to be one and the same. Take Sunday afternoon, for example, and head out to the St. James Community Center in Southport, NC for the Christmas Gift Show. All of the vendor at this free show will be local merchants – check it out.

On Saturday morning from 9AM until 1 PM you can stop by the Shallotte Holiday Market at Mulberry Park in Shallotte, NC. There you will find 40 vendors offering locally grown food, and locally made food products as well as arts and crafts. This open air market also offer live music and a bike rodeo for kids ages 12 and under.

Saturday, from 11AM until 1:30PM is also a good time to stop by Greenlands Farm Store in Bolivia, NC where you can participate in food tastings at their ‘A Taste of the Holidays’ event. You may want to place orders at that time for their ‘Gourmet Farm to Go Holiday Meals and Sweets’ for yummy holidays with a bit less work.

You might want to begin your weekend at 7PM at Hatch Auditorium in Caswell Beach, NC. The Brunswick Concert Band will be performing and honoring the original members of the band. This 80 member band began with only 14 members – something to celebrate. There will be a second performance on Sunday at 3PM at the Odell Williamson Auditorium in Bolivia, NC.

Music

It is said that music soothes the savage beast. If that is so, there is a whole of of soothing going on in Brunswick County, NC. We are lucky to have all kinds of musicians living, working and volunteering here. We have an excellent music venue in the Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick County Community College in Bolivia, NC. This auditorium provides a space for our local musical groups to perform as well as bringing in musical entertainment from outside the area. Performances are held there by our own Sea Notes Choral Society and the Brunswick Concert Band and Big Band.

We have all recently been through months of political stress. Some of us are rejoicing at the outcome. Some of us are grieving. On weekend nights, local musicians perform at some of our restaurants. Why not go out this weekend and celebrate or ‘cry in your beer’ with music to help you through. The restaurants and nightspots in Southport, NC and Oak Island, NC where you can enjoy music are listed below. Why not give them a call to find out who is playing when – choose your poison – and enjoy your weekend.
