Now that I have your attention….. Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while are bound to know that I have nothing against kids. In fact, our website has a Kidstuff section with all kinds of events, attractions and amusements geared especially to kids. You will find art related activities; outdoors activities; fun learning activities (but don’t tell the kids); fishing activities; summer camps and the best places to find ice cream and smoothies.
Kids are fun and it’s great to spend time with them, however, sometimes we need some time for ourselves. Not only time alone, but time to enjoy our adult friends and do adult things. Things like going to an adult movie; having a quiet dinner out; going to a concert; going to a play; going out dancing and having drinks in an adults only atmosphere. There are many places in Brunswick County, NC where we can do those things and that’s a good thing. Making special plans is a good thing as well. Hire a sitter, if necessary, make your reservations and head on out to a couple of upcoming events. The first two do require purchase of tickets in advance, so get on the ball. You’ll be glad you did.
This Saturday you can enjoy Las Vegas Night in Supply, NC, while supporting a good cause:
On Friday, February 5, you can have fun Mardi Gras style in the Town of Oak Island:
For a later night out, check out Slainte (open until 2 AM) in Southport, NC:
It’s never too soon to plan your beach vacation. We are thankful for the mild winter we are experiencing in Brunswick County, NC, especially after the last two unusually cold ones. It’s lovely, and we are lucky, to be able to walk on the beach (even if bundled up) throughout the year. Most folks, however – especially those from colder climes – prefer summer at the beach. During the season, we share our beaches with folks from far and wide. These visitors need places to stay. Yes, we have many nice hotels, motels and B & Bs, but sometimes it works better to rent a house – even for locals who may be getting too many visitors to accommodate in their homes. This is where beach rental agencies come in handy. Renting a house on the beach is almost like living at the beach, however temporarily. You can walk out your door right onto the beach. You can sleep to the sound of the surf at night. You can choose to eat at one of the many fine restaurants in the area, or stop at the grocery store and pick up ingredients for you own special dishes. You can bring your whole family with you, have a family reunion, or invite all your friends to stay. There are some great beach rental agencies in the area – here are just a few:
The years slip by like pages in a book. It’s January – a new beginning – and before we know it, it’s December again. We go to work, to school, take care of our families, do what is necessary – what is expected of us. This is all good, but we need to remember to enjoy our lives as well. This is important – to us, to those we love, and to those around us. We who live in Brunswick County, NC have the best of all worlds as our many visitors will tell you. The ocean is here – always – not just in the summer. It is our constant companion.
Southport is a walking meditation in the off season. We can begin at Waterfront Park where at any time of the year you can park your car and enjoy the view. You might sit on a swing or stroll down to the City Pier where most every day someone is fishing. You can walk through the tree lined streets, visit history in the Old Brunswick County Jail or the peace of the Old Smithville Burying Ground.
You might stop at the Southport Visitors’ Center (it’s not just for visitors), check out the museum and pick up a brochure for the Southport Trail which will guide you on a two mile walk through the town and its attractions. And don’t forget to enjoy nature’s free show of sunrises and sunsets.
