LABOR DAY

Most people know that Labor Day was established to honor American workers. Some people know that labor unions played a significant part in establishing the holiday for the American workers. Others may know that Canada also observes Labour Day for the Canadian workers on the first Monday in September and that more than 80 other countries observe International Workers’ Day on May first of each year. Designating Monday as the holiday has the extra benefit of providing a three day weekend for those who normally work Monday through Friday. While you are enjoying the time off and taking part in festivities, remember there are those who work at least one day of the three day weekend and count yourself lucky.  Labor Day is typically celebrated with cook-outs, parties and special events. For some people it is the last day they will be able to go swimming until pools open again next summer. Here in Brunswick County, NC, we are lucky to have the ocean and the weather to allow us to take a dip well into Fall. There are also special events to enjoy. Check out the following to find the ones in which you would like to take part:

Oak Island Art Guild Labor Day Arts & Crafts Festival – Saturday, September 5

Labor Day Surf Off – Saturday September 5

Children’s Crab Derby – Monday, September 7
