CAMPING

Many years ago I went camping with a bunch of women friends. The campground where we stayed was a bit primitive by modern standards, but we wanted it that way. We took our tents, set them up and slept in them. We made a campfire for sitting around and sharing stories, but also for cooking. The meat, potatoes and onions we wrapped in aluminum foil and buried beneath it to bake was one of the best meals I have ever tasted. There was a small lake for swimming and a bath house that included showers. It was a weekend of camaraderie, laughter and getting to know each other a bit better. Now it is a memory that I cherish.

In today’s camping world, the experience can be more comfortable in many ways than the experience my friends and I had. Motor homes allow you to bring all the comforts of home with you and camp grounds have everything else you might need. In Brunswick County, NC, you can find campgrounds with events and amenities for kids such as swimming pools and swings as well as proximity to your favorite beaches. DISCOVER YOUR OWN COUNTY

If you are like most people, when you live in a place for any length of time you often do not take advantage of available places or events thinking that you have plenty of time to do that. You may even find yourself stumped when a visitor asks, “What should I not miss?” Brunswick County, NC has so much to offer from the beaches to the Green Swamp; from the Ev Henwood Nature Preserve (http://leland.insiderinfo.us/sports-fitness-parks/parks/ev-henwood-nature-preserve/profile/) to Lake Waccamaw; from the New Hanover County line to the South Carolina line. And all of these places hold special events throughout the year. A good example is this coming weekend. There are so many events going on throughout the county that you would be hard pressed to attend all of them. WHAT’S HAPPENING

Many years ago T. S. Eliot wrote: “April is the cruellest month” in his poem The Waste Land. He was not referring to income tax time, but for those of us who are required to pay into the IRS, he may as well have been. Luckily we live in Brunswick County, NC where there are so many interesting places and events available to us that can take our minds off of our tax troubles. Many of these events are free and those that are not usually serve worthy causes that benefit all of us. The water offers so much, be it the ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Cape Fear River, the lakes – it is all there for us to enjoy and we are blessed with the kind of weather that allows us to enjoy these things. We can walk on the beach, sit by the water and meditate, fish, go sailing, ride a ferry, swim, take out a kayak, sunbathe – whatever helps us be happy. We are also lucky in the events that are available to us to enjoy. They are as varied as the ways there are to enjoy water. Here are a few that are coming up this month.

You can take the kids or the grands to the Kids’ Art Day in Franklin Square Park:

You can dress up (or not) and dance the night away at the Black-Tie-Optional-Gala in Southport, NC:

You can test your endurance in the Oak Island Lighthouse 1/2 Marathon 10K/5K Run/Walk:

VOLUNTEERS HAVE HAPPY HEARTS

Many people see Easter as a new beginning and some people also see Spring as a new beginning. Anytime is a great time to begin anew, but these events seem to give impetus to us when we need a little nudge. The new life around us stirs our inner being. We look for things to fill us beyond the beauty around us. In Brunswick County, NC we are blessed with beauty and we celebrate it in so many ways. One way we can celebrate it is to be a part of it and to help in giving it to others. Volunteering is a giving of self and a receiving of so much at the same time. We can meet new people, make new friends, enjoy the work we do, fill our empty days and become happier with ourselves in the process. In Brunswick County, NC you can easily find volunteer opportunities in your area of interest. Opportunities abound in human services, children’s services, the arts, historic preservation, community development and animal welfare. Here are just a few of the opportunities in which you can participate and fill your life to the brim:
