Most of the tourists visit Brunswick County, NC during the summer months. They spend their time enjoying the beaches, shopping, eating at our excellent restaurants and participating in scheduled events. The residents, however, know how to have fun, too. Even though the summer officially ends with Labor Day, there are events every weekend from which to choose. Last week I suggested three options: Big Toy Day, the Around Oak Island Sunfish Race, and the Brunswick County Intercultural Festival. Here are three more to add to your calendar:

September 6, 2014 – The Brunswick Family Assistance 10K, 5K & 1-mile Fun Run and 10K walk at Sea Trail Resort and Convention Center (

Determined runners at the start in one of our races at Beautiful Brunswick Forest

September 27, 2014 – The Southport Wooden Boat Show (

September 28, 2014 – The First Bank Oktoberfest 15K & 5K in Brunswick Forest (

2012 Finisher Medals

September is one of the loveliest months in the NC Brunswick Islands. The temperature begins to become more comfortable yet it is still warm enough for beaching. Kids are back in school giving parents a breather. Traffic is lighter as the tourist season winds down. Fishing begins to pick up. The air is fresher and the focus of outdoor activities broadens to include walking in the parks, hiking, bicycling, boating on inland waters and other ways of spending time in nature. Here are a few outdoor events coming up in September to help you plan:

Big Toy Day, Cape Fear Regional Jetport, September 6 (

Around Oak Island Sunfish Race, Southport Yacht Basin, September 20 (

Brunswick County Intercultural Festival, Brunswick Community College, September 27 (

It ‘s the middle of August. Summer is coming to a close. The kids will soon be starting back to school if they have not done so already. Visitors will be dreaming for another year of staying at the beach until they can, again, make that dream a reality. Those of us who live here are the lucky ones. Do not despair. There are still some interesting, fun, exciting events in which you can take part. Here are a few:

Phlock to the Beach, August 22 – 23, 2014 (

The Oak Island Art Guild Labor Day Arts & Crafts Festival, August 30, 2014 (

 Children’s Crab Derby, September 1, 2014 (

There’s nothing like a meal of freshly caught fish – and there’s nothing like a day spent fishing for those fish from the NC fishing piers. Imagine the sun and the soft breeze – the smell of salt air. Feel the relaxation of having your line in the water waiting for a bite – the excitement of that pull on the line – the joy of reeling in your catch. Enjoy your time alone or with friends and the camaraderie of others taking part in the same rituals. Brunswick County, NC offers a number of fishing piers for your enjoyment. Here are a few:

City Pier, Southport, NC (

Oak Island Pier, NC (

Ocean Crest Pier, Oak Island, NC (
