Summer Camp

School is out – or nearly so – and the kids will need something to keep them occupied. Summer camps are a great way for them to enjoy their time off from school. What the kids don’t realize is that while they are having fun at camp, they are also likely learning new skills that will keep their brains from turning to mush until the start of another year of school. Shhhh, don’t tell them. Brunswick County, NC abounds in summer camp programs, each with its own focus. There are pirate camps, horseback riding camps, ocean themed camps, farm camps and more. Check out a list of them below:

Memorial Day

The Memorial Day weekend is coming up and we will see flags flying everywhere as reminders of those who have made it possible for us to be able to live free in this beautiful country. Many have sacrificed for us and for their own families and I believe they deserve to be remembered, acknowledged and celebrated. I believe they would want us to enjoy our freedoms this weekend as well. To spend time with friends and family in all the ways they have made possible for us. We who live in Brunswick County, NC are especially lucky to have access to many ways to celebrate – not the least of which is the ocean and the beaches. These provide enjoyment in boating, swimming, sunning, fishing, surfing and much more. Here are a few other ideas:

Fishing Tournaments

Fishing is a way of life for some in the NC Brunswick Islands. We often see the wooden shrimp boats plying the waters off the coast with their entourage of seagulls floating behind like so many kites. For those of us on shore the sight is picturesque and beautiful. For those on the boats it is their work. However, there are a number of recreational fishermen in the area as well. You see them fishing from the piers, surf fishing, casting for bait, fishing from boats and going to sea on charter fishing boats. Then there are the fishing tournaments. These usually begin in the spring and are held nearly every weekend through the fall. Fisherman enter these tournaments for the camaraderie of fishing with others and the hope of winning a prize. Her are a few upcoming tournaments:

Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 11 is Mother’s Day.

Mothers – we all have one. Mothers are responsible for our very lives. Some of us are lucky enough to have our mothers still living. All of us are lucky to have one. Wherever your mother may be, you can honor her. It really does not take much – a phone call, a card, a prayer, a lit candle, a visit, a dinner, a kiss, a hug, some flowers, a gift as simple as candy. Most mothers just appreciate the fact that you are thinking of them. Some restaurants offer special menus for Mother’s Day. Flower shops offer special arrangements. If you are thinking of a gift of jewelry this year you will find jewelry shops in the area that carry lovely pieces. Here are a few:
