Brunswick County NC is filled with all kinds of artists, art associations, art galleries, studios, art guilds and groups and has its own vibrant arts council. Newcomers are often amazed at the amount of talent that abounds here and are pleased to take part in events offered by these groups. This is the first of a series of posts that will highlight the arts and art venues available to residents and visitors alike.
The Associated Artists of Southport is a nonprofit cooperative organization made up of local artists and housed in historic Franklin Square Gallery at 130 E. West St. in Southport. This group is dedicated to the cultural enrichment of the community through education and the promotion of original art and provides an increasingly rich environment for the growth and development of local visual artists. Drawing and painting classes are held Monday through Thursday in the upstairs studio. There are regularly scheduled workshops in various media by recognized artists as well as judged exhibitions and competitions, all of which are open to the public. Painting and pottery classes for children of the community are conducted yearly and are partially funded by grants from the Brunswick Arts Council. Kids’ Day is a community fun day, free to the public. Association members serve as instructors, speakers and judges for local schools and organizations. Local artists are encouraged to participate in the shows held in the spring and summer and to consider membership in the association.
Currently the 2014 Spring Show is on display in the gallery and a reception will be held on Friday, March 7, from 5 PM until 7 PM. The reception is open to the public and features food, wine and an awards ceremony.
